chocolate things

chocolate things | the thoughtful platePosting this recipe for Chocolate Things was not part of my plan. I made them on a whim last Friday for my family and myself, because some days I just need something bread-y and I need to make something from the Cheese Board’s book. Thus, that afternoon was spent kneading doughs and shaping said doughs into knots and rolls.

They came out of the oven while there was still just enough light outside to snap a few photos, so I did. Not great photos, and definitely not photos intended for the blog, but photos for documentation nonetheless.

The next day, while at the art museum, my beloved camera lens sustained a small fall and separated into two pieces. It was tragic. I probably shed a tear or two. I don’t know if anyone was watching or not, and I don’t care. The lens that I use almost everyday and can’t blog without died. Continue reading

hot chocolate for snowy days

hot chocolate | the thoughtful plateI don’t know if you’re aware of this, but a fairly decent portion of the US is covered in white right now. And white = snow = cold.

Enter: hot chocolate. While it can’t do anything about the snow, it certainly helps with the cold. Continue reading

ricotta crêpes with bananas + chocolate + almond butter

ricotta crêpes with bananas + chocolate + almond butter | the thoughtful plateAs far as I’m concerned, the only way to even think about serving crêpes to more people than just yourself is to make them well in advance. Follow this advice and you will enjoy a peaceful existence. Disregard it and suffer. Okay, maybe it’s not quite that bad, but seriously. Have you ever tried to make crêpes in real time? It’s stressful!

Here’s the proper approach: Continue reading

21 + red wine chocolate cake with whipped mascarpone

IMG_9725Today is the first day of a new calendar year, and also the first day of my 21st year on this earth. I have never posted about my birthday in the past couple years of blogging, but 21 is kind of a big deal, I suppose, so I figured I should start now. Continue reading

cream scones

cream scones | the thoughtful plateToday we had friends from home visit (!!) and I made scones. So I’m popping in on this fine Saturday to share the recipe. Also, I just really wanted to post these photos because, see that serving board? My brother made that for me for Christmas! Isn’t it gorgeous? I love it.

I had so much fun arranging a bunch of mini scones on it and setting it out next to the coffee cups and little plates and forks. Continue reading

i’m back! + chocolate almond milkshakes

IMG_5261Wow… I kind of fell off the blogging bandwagon for a while, didn’t I? I didn’t mean to do it. Life just kind of happened and suddenly I found myself at home for two months, where I happily soaked up every single minute spent in the places I love with people I love.

While away, I…

participated in the August Break photography challenge.
met a blogger friend in real life for the first time. (Check out her gorgeous new blog!)
hiked in Yosemite.
spent quite a few random days in the city.
shot senior photos for the first time.
tried to slow down and be aware of little details.

The blog break was simply a bi-product of so many lunches out (or hurried lunches in) and dinners out or at houses of friends, etc. It was nice. I don’t feel guilty. This little space has always been a natural reflection of my daily life through food, and I hope to keep it that way. Clearly, what it’s been reflecting recently is that I’ve been away, resting and recharging. (Kind of like when my phone battery gets really really low in the middle of the day and I have to go plug it in on the desk and go without it for a while.) I’m back now though, ready to go, and excited about the next few months and what they’ll bring. Continue reading

cake on a tuesday night just because.

This afternoon I decided that cake sounded like a nice thing to eat. If you know me, you know that I always feel like eating brownies or ice cream; I rarely feel like eating cake. But since it’s a Tuesday, and I do love frosting cakes, I figured it might be a good idea to go with this sudden craving. Continue reading

flourless brownies

I’ve been slowly realizing that I probably should have included chocolate in my blog name so maybe I wouldn’t feel guilty about sharing so many chocolate recipes all the time. If I’d been thinking ahead back then, I would have. I know myself, and myself craves chocolate. All. the. time. Continue reading
